Wrap yourself in the season’s coziest coats

An enduring classic that's been around for nearly sixty years, cocoon coats are back

’Tis the season to hunker down and bundle up. What better time for the return of the  cocoon coat? The iconic silhouette, introduced by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in the late fifties, revolutionized fashion. Shoulders became broader and rounder. Waistlines all but disappeared. A new balancing act between curves and volume reflected a freer attitude. Today’s cocoons are bigger than ever for autumn/winter 2013, with Céline, Carven, and, yes, Balenciaga leading the way.

Whether you’re shopping for new or scouring vintage boutiques, look for clean lines, sloped shoulders, and an oversized fit. Pair the season’s unexpectedly soft pastels and muted neutrals with chunky, angular ankle boots. Add a statement belt. Play with scale and carry a small lady bag.

When you’re feeling this warm and fabulous, you just may want to stay in your cocoon and never come out.

Add a belt for a fresh spin on the classic cocoon. We’re obsessed with this creamy leather and horn cincher from Panache Vintage & Finer Consignment. Keep the look clean and minimal with bare legs and sharp, black stiletto boots. (A thin layer of Aquaphor or Vaseline smoothed onto your shins keeps winter skin super-hydrated and luminous.)
