Nick's Picks: Starry Nites Cafe

Sometimes a cup of coffee is just that, a cup of coffee. A necessity that is consumed without pleasure in mind, instead an act of survival, meant to wake you from the dead. Other times however, a cup of coffee is much more than just caffeine—it’s an entire experience.

Like wine, beer, barbeque, pizza, and almost any category of gastronomy, hipsters have their hands all over the coffee business. While this has led to innovation and the idea of coffee making as an art, it has also led to a coffee shop experience that can be very pretentious. Cream shaming and callous baristas are a turn-off, no matter how good the coffee is.

Starry Nites Cafe in the Neighborhood of the Arts is a rare breed, a coffee shop that takes its craft seriously, while still harboring a warm, welcoming environment.

Named after the famous Van Gogh painting that adorns an entire wall of the cafe, Starry Nites has an array of drink and dining options. Coffee, espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, tea, and more are all offered, both hot and cold.

Unique lattes named after local neighborhoods are one of Starry Nites’s specialties. The Oxford, made with espresso, steamed milk, and Irish cream and vanilla flavoring, is the perfect drink to enjoy slowly while taking in the ambiance around you. Artwork, old board games, and a wooden interior make for a relaxed, wistful atmosphere.

Starry Nites also has spacious outdoor seating one can enjoy an iced coffee or white wine, weather permitting.

In addition to its vast selection of drinks, Starry Nites Cafe trots out a relatively large and ambitious menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, wraps, and baked goods.

The chicken pesto wrap, with juicy chicken breast, melted mozzarella, and an earthy mix of fresh basil pesto, roasted red peppers, and baby spinach, is a must-have.

Whether it’s for a quick cup of joe while on the run, an improvised office for a late night of work, or simply a place to read the newest edition of 585 magazine, Starry Nites Cafe offers all that a good coffee shop must, and then some.
